"The Spooks Apprentice" by Joseph Delaney is the book I would personally recommend to people who like witches and monsters and horror books. This book is about a boy who is the "seventh son of the seventh son". This means he is a person who possesses the power to detect witches or chase boggarts. With the Spook, who is the one charged with protecting people from otherworldly beings, he solves mysteries and always manages to find himself in the most dangerous of places. The Wardstone Chronicles is a series of 5 books about Thomas and the spook

The book I most enjoyed this year was definitely "Numbers" by Rachel Ward. It is actually a trilogy, about people who see numbers in people's eyes, not random numbers, but the date of their death. When Jem notices that the numbers of all the people around her are the current day, she deduces there will be an accident and runs with her best friend Spider. And so an epic chase around the country begins as secret services notice her fleeing from the crime scene and decide to bring them in for questioning.
